DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING
PROJECT 2

Lecture Notes:

WEEK 7 // Recolouring and Poster Concept

This week Mr. Yusoff instructed us on how to use the more advanced selection refinement techniques to create a more precise mask in order to create more precise areas to recolour the black and white images that we were provided. Mr. Yusoff also helped critique the designs of our posters and give us tips for improvement.

WEEK 8 // Independent Learning Week

There was no lecture session this week as it was the Independent Learning Week, and we were left to finish up this project.

WEEK 9 // Project 2 Completion and Intro to After Effects

Mr. Yusoff helped give comments on some on the completed works that the students have presented. After that he moved on to teach us the basic animating techniques that can be done in Adobe After Effects.

Practical for Project 2A, Week 7

The first step when making a recoloured image is to define to colour range that is to be used for each element in the image. After importing the reference images, I obtained the average of a 5 by 5 area of the highlight, shadow and mid tone for each part of the image.

(Fig 01, Obtaining Colour Averages, 14/5/2021)

After that, a broad selection was made with the quick select tool. Then the option to refine the mask on the right is selected. There I could make use of Photoshops colour aware/object aware scale in order to make a more accurate selection based on the algorithms predictions. The ability to control the opacity of the mask also helps make the transition of colour in hair smoother.

(Fig 02, Select Refinement, 14/5/2021)

After creating a mask, it was as simple as filling the layer with a solid colour. Of course a normal blend mode layer would create a completely opaque cover which had to be changed. Trying the overlay and soft light blend modes, I decided that a soft light layer would look more natural.

This series of steps above was repeated for each portion of the image such as skin and clothing. The fur coat did present a bit more of a challenge as it also required some edge feathering, similar to the hair.

Google Slides Breakdown for Project 2B

Practical for Project 2B

Before starting anything else, I wanted to look for example posters on the Internet in order to get some inspiration. While sifting through the multitude of examples that Pinterest and Google had provided, I found that many of them were designed in a way that made it difficult to incorporate my own elements. Two posters in particular stuck out to me.

(Fig 01, Poster Reference 01, 13/5/2021)

(Fig 02, Poster Reference 02, 13/5/2021)

I really liked how they used the hands in the second example. The expressiveness of the hands could be something I could use in my own composition later on. Before I continued on, I had to look for a more specified theme and subject that was under the broad umbrella of "Refugees in Malaysia" which was the focus of this project.

After gathering information from this news article, I decided to focus the theme of the poster on the rejection of Rohingya refugees right when they reached the shores of Malaysia. With that I could decide on the Title, Slogan and Call for Action that was to be included in the poster.

Now that I had the details of the poster sorted out, I began to throw out some rough sketches of the posters composition. In the end, I settled on the second composition because I felt that it had more room for variation.

(Fig 03, Rough Sketch 01, 13/5/2021)

(Fig 04, Rough Sketch 02, 13/5/2021)

One of the requirements of the poster was the usage of photographic elements that are obtained by ourselves. As such, the main subject of the poster which were the hands, would be using picture of my own hands. Snapping a quick picture of the back and forth of my hand, I them out to be used in the composition.

(Fig 05, Hand 01, 13/5/2021)

(Fig 06, Hand 02, 13/5/2021)

Beginning with only a blue background so that the white elements would be more visible, I began to construct the basic shape of the composition, which was framed by a white border. After that I also began to compose the text according to the sketch that I had made earlier.

(Fig 07, Basic Compositing, 15/5/2021)

After that, I wanted to add a background of the ocean to represent the situation of the Rohingya refugees being pushed back out to the sea. Currently, I was unable to go out and take a picture of the sea, therefore I had to make do with a picture from the internet. When inserted under the title, it looked very distracting, and therefore gave it a fade out before it reached the title.

(Fig 08, Background Addition, 15/5/2021)

After that I had to add the hands into the composition. Cropping the hands out was easy enough with the quick select tool. The colour tones of the original hand were very red and warm in colour, to suit the theme of the image I had to adjust the levels and used the match colour function. I also added shadows behind the hand to give it a little depth.

(Fig 09, Making Shadows, 15/5/2021)

The final elements that I had to add to the poster were the slogan and call for action. I left a large portion of negative space at the bottom right quadrant specifically for these two elements. I had to play with the layering a little to make it seem more cohesive rather than just a solid colour text box floating above the composition.

Feedback:

WEEK 7: Mr. Yusoff commented that the design of the poster was interesting, but I would need to flesh out the message behind the poster more.

WEEK 8: No feedback was given this week.

WEEK 9:

Reflections

WEEK 7: The recolouring portion of the exercises this week was quite fun. A more advanced version of the recolouring techniques used in previous classes, it was still quite the learning experience as I had never used a masking method similar to this. The poster portion of the project was difficult as the concept of the poster had to be well fleshed out.

WEEK 8: As it was the Independent Learning Week at the time, I kept myself busy with the works from other classes as I had already completed the first pass at this project. I paid not much mind in remaking this poster at the time.

WEEK 9: We were expected to wrap up the final stages of the project this week. Mr. Yusoff introduced us to the basic of using After Effects this week and assigned a simple exercise to help us get started in getting used to the programme. It was quite enjoyable, though the differences in interface compared to Premiere Pro, which I'm more accustomed to, did make it quite annoying to navigate properly.
