REFLECTIONS ON THE SEMESTER
EXPERIENCE
Over the past 3 or so months, I've gotten more used to the submission/lecture practices that have been adopted for the online classes, compared to my first semester at Taylor's. Despite the smaller number of separate tasks for this semester, I felt that the complexity of these tasks have increased drastically. While the lack of physical lectures is rather unfortunate, I enjoyed the easier submission mediums for the tasks. While I may not be taking a subject related to typography as my specialization, this module did make it apparent that I should pay more attention on the arrangement of type, even in animation, as it can really add to the overall aesthetic of a work. For the task regarding the extraction of type from a source image, it was a very interesting experience, and more specifically it really opened up a lot of new video editing effects that I do for personal projects.
I did manage to keep myself on top of my work for this semester, which was much better than before. However, I still feel that I could develop my work ethic much more than as I am currently. One downside that I noticed about lectures this semester, not just for this module but for all modules in general, is that it is very intensive and most of the time I was unable to find time to partake in my own personal hobbies, namely music. Overall, my experience with this module has been rather pleasant, all things considered.
OBSERVATIONS
Personally, I felt that much of the focus on the work in this semester was more on the conceptual aspect of typography, whilst the previous basic typography module was more of an introductory course for the practical execution of the creative process. A lot of the work done in this semester required more creating from the ground up with directions that are a lot less set in stone. The allowed usage of colours in tasks for this semester also opened up a new dimension for innovation when it came to designing typography related graphics. This combined with certain arrangements of text create a game of certain combinations working well together and some not. Honestly it was a bit difficult to juggle so many factors at one time, but its important for the sake of improvement.
FINDINGS
Creating a consistent typeface or type design is incredibly difficult. While I could maintain a largely even stroke width throughout a letterform, however some subtle mistakes I made in these letterforms would result in them looking uncanny in a sense. The typeface design with ink traps I created for Task 3 of this module was incredibly difficult to nail correctly, due to negative space cutting into the silhouette of the letterform. Perhaps its been a bit ambitious, but the balance between the consistency and practicality of the ink traps was something that I felt I was unable to achieve well. The arrangement of text is also a very interesting subject to touch upon. There are certain conventions when it comes to designing a composition for specific purpose or theme. This makes it all the more impressive when skilled designers manage to create an arrangement which contradicts all these expected rules and still create a compelling design. While I definitely am not at this level currently, I think that it is something worth pursuing on the side, as it can greatly benefit projects that I create by myself.
